e current edition of the range-topping Mercedes S-Class has been available on the market since 7 years ago, and apparently, it is approaching the end of its era. The designers and engineers of the German brand are busily giving the final touches on the replacement of the big sedan, which is set to launch in 2013.

The German automaker has promised that they has gone to great lengths to make the next generation S-Class as technologically advanced and as refined as possible but unfortunately, the company has not given any precise indications of what can be gotten by customers, especially Mercedes-Benz lovers around the world.

MotoriOnline, a media fromItaly reports that one of the breakthroughs will be offered by Mercedes-Benz with the S-Class replacement is a 9-speed sequential automatic transmission dubbed the 9G-Tronic. The 9-speed gearbox was specially developed as a successor to the existing 7-speed unit. It is reported to greatly improve the fuel efficiency of the car and help it get a quiet and smooth ride.

The 9-speed gearbox will be mounted under the Mercedes-Benz S-Class longitudinally. It will be adaptable to just about each kind of drivetrain ranging from an entry level turbodiesel engine up to the most powerful gasoline one. It will be applied in both rear- and four-wheel drive systems and Mercedes claims that the gearbox is even suitable for the hybrid variant, which is expected to be completed the new lineup. After the S-Class, the new 9-speed transmission will likely trickle down to other models of the German badge.

Some sources said that the next installment of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be available in no less than 4 different body styles. The first one will be similar with the current S-Class we found today and it will be offered in two different wheelbase lengths.

The second model will appear as a larger coupe that will be replacing the existing CL-Class. Whether or not, it will retain the CL badge is still uncertain.
The third model is likely to be a limousine similar to the 600Pullmanthat was made in the 60s and 70s. This model is aimed to fill the gap left by the demise of Maybach, a sub-brand belongs to Daimler AG.
The fourth body style maybe will be the most interesting one. The German company is expected to build the production version of theOcean Driveconcept that has eve been displayed in 2007 at the Detroit Motor Show.
